I’m here to talk about pizza. Do you love pizza? I thought so. On that note, let’s continue, shall we?
A really good pizza stopped me in my tracks recently. It was lust at first sight, love at first bite. I’m not kidding; I take the Order of the Pie very seriously. I wasn’t alone in my thinking; as my two dining partners were suitably impressed. One even proclaimed that it was ‘the best pizza she ever had.’
The home of my new favourite pizza is Gotham Café on South Anne Street. It’s easy to find and the location can’t be beat; it’s just off Grafton Street. Gotham is the perfect place for casual dining for family and friends alike, and they do brunch on Sundays. Sure look at these images! Crowds never lie. There wasn’t a single empty table and lots of people came looking for one throughout our time there. That’s why this review is pretty short and sweet, light on both text and pictures. I wasn’t about to try meander around busy tables and risk interrupting some poor soul’s intimate pizza moment.
Of course, there’s more on offer than a huge selection of woodstone oven pizzas (each one named after different New York neighbourhoods and districts) and the menu has something to suit everyone. Burgers? Check. Pasta? Check. Fish, Chicken, Steak, Salads, Antipasti? Check times five.
When you’re done trying to choose, you’ll probably have just as much trouble with dessert – cheesecake, brownies, tiramisu. No fruity dessert in sight, and you can order an affogato! My kind of place.
So in short, go to Gotham Café if you’re a fan of good atmosphere, delicious fresh food (PIZZA) and very pleasant service…and let’s be honest, who isn’t?I also enjoyed that our pizza was served with a bottle chilli oil. Surely you’ll enjoy that too. Pizzas also come in regular or large, depending on what you think you’ll be able to scarf down that day.
The Bronx – Spanish Chorizo sausage with roasted South African baby peppers, fresh oregano and a blend of mozzarella and feta cheese.
Upper East Side – Pepperoni, ham, sweetcorn, green peppers, mushroom, pineapple, and mozzarella cheese.
The prosciutto and chevrè calzone – A stuffed half-moon pizza with prosciutto ham, fresh basil, garlic and a blend of mozzarella and goat’s cheese.
Here is the inside of my pizza, which I treated as an pocket to hold a puddle of chilli oil. I spent nearly an hour eating this pizza, for fear of letting it go.
On a sort of related (but not really) note –
“He’s the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So we’ll hunt him. Because he can take it. Because he’s not our hero. He’s a silent guardian, a watchful protector. A dark knight.”
Sorry, I couldn’t help it. Gary Oldman is the best.
